Attacks on business's computer systems have hit a new high in the last three months. Figures just released show that attacks from malware - malicious software - went up by a staggering 338 per cent and malware designed to steal passwords was up by 267 per cent.
Much of it is now being aimed at industries that criminals believe have less secure IT. Malware is a piece of software secretly loaded onto your computer. It is specifically designed to damage or disrupt your system. It can also steal key information such as passwords or allow other people to get into your computer system remotely.
According to the Global Threat Report by security firm ScanSafe, three-quarters of malware is coming directly from compromised websites. These are everyday websites that have been altered by malware creators to secretly distribute their programmes. Another way malware can get into your system is if an employee opens an attachment on a malicious email, normally spam.
The best defence against malware is to keep your system fully protected with up-to-date virus protection.
